T.Heimburg. 2003. Fluktuationen in Biomembranen. Jahrbuch der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft 2003 abstract46

Our group is predominantly interested in cooperative phenomena of artificial and biological membranes. In particular, we study lipid melting, elastic constants, relaxation processes and permeation. We use a variety of spectroscopic and thermodynamics techniques, from infrared and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy to calorimetry and pressure jump measurements. Simultaneously we develop the theoretical methodology to analyze our experiments, e.g. by Monte Carlo simulations. The aim is to establish a view of biological membranes as being complex multi-particle systems in which thermodynamics phenomena play an important role that cannot be understood solely on the basis of single molecules.
