NBI Social Club for Staff

Dear colleagues. Summer is here and so is the brand new NBI Social Club for Staff. The purpose of the club is to make it possible to arrange social events for the whole institute.

A lot of the groups have a lot of social events after hours, but our hope is that we can all socialize regardless of position, VIP/TAP or research field.

If you would like to have a wine tasting, go to a museum or have a biking club with your NBI colleagues, the club is the way to go. The club will make sure the event is announced and it will also be possible to apply for financial support. More information will follow.

The NTE is a go!

On Friday 14th of February 2014, The Niels Bohr Institute and the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) officially entered into a collaboration to build the NOT Transient Explorer (NTE), an instrument that will take the scientific capabilities of the La Palma- based telescope to the next level!

In April 2007 the Nordic Optical Telescope Scientific Association (NOTSA) announced a call for ideas for new instruments for the Nordic Optical Telescope on the Canarian Island of La Palma. Responding to this call Michael Andersen and Johan Fynbo submitted a concept for a new instrument that at the same time would allow both imaging and spectroscopy over the full optical and near-infrared spectral range.

This is unlike a more typical instrument that will only cover a limited spectral range, but for the study of transient objects the constant availability of the full spectra range is crucial. The concept subsequently developed in the strategy document for the future of the NOT in 2010.

In the history of art, one can find numerous artists who have interpreted scientific perspectives and inventions. These texts will provide insight into the interchange between science and art - from Leonardo da Vinci’s systematic studies of nature to the caricatures of Darwin and science in contemporary art.

Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance
Leonardo, who today is considered to be the founder of High Renaissance style, was an artist, architect, inventor, engineer and scientist.

The Scientific Revolution and the Baroque
While deviations from Aristotle’s teachings were often seen as an attack on the church in the 1500s, during the 1600s studies of nature...

OplysningstidenThe Age of Enlightenment
The Age of Enlightenment is a period in European intellectual history that can be placed around the 1700s. The period was characterised by a strong belief in the...

Den industrielle revolution og romantikkenThe Industrial Revolution and Romanticism

In the 19th century, natural philosophy branched out into the specialised sciences, Darwin’s theory of evolution created uproar and great progress was made in technology.

Fra Einstein til EliassonFrom Einstein to Eliasson
In the 1900s many new groundbreaking scientific theories emerged as artists experimented with time and space.
