August 24th - 30th 2008 : Quantum and Nonlinear Optics - Ph.D. Summer School, Backfallsbyn, Hven
The Ph.D. summer school Q&NLO 2008 (http://intersigma.dk/qnlo ) will cover basic principles of nonlinear- and quantum optics with special emphasis on modern aspects of nonlinear wave conversion, quantum information science and solid-state quantum optics with applications in quantum communication, quantum information processing and the generation and application of coherent light for e.g. nanophotonics, spectroscopy and biomedicine. The material is organized in the following main topics:
- Nonlinear optics and quantum optics - basic principles and theory.
- Nonlinear photonic crystals, optical parametric processes, sources of coherent light, devices and systems.
- Quantum information, theoretical quantum optics, QO with discrete and continuous variables.
- Light-atom optics and quantum information protocols.
- Solid-state quantum optics for high nonlinearities and quantum information.
Invited lecturers will give extended presentations reviewing these areas and lead discussion groups. Moreover, the attendees at the summer school will have the opportunity to present their own current research projects, results and ideas in a creative discussion with teachers and fellow students.
The summer school will be set on the island of Hven in the Øresund strait between Denmark and Sweden. Hven is home to the remnants of famous astronomer Tycho Brahe's castle and observatories Uranienborg and Stjerneborg.
Invited lecturers:
Hans A. Bachor, Department of Physics, Director ACQAO, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia

June 25th - July 6th 2007 : Niels Bohr International Academy workshop on solid state quantum information systems
The workshop will focus on the possibilities of forming quantum information devices in the realm of solid state systems, such as e.g. quantum dots formed in two-dimensional electron gases, nanowires, or self-assembled quantum dots. The important research themes are the various mechanisms for electrical or optical control of the quantum states as well as the issues of quantum coherence times. Moreover, also the integration of solid state qubits and quantum optical systems is a key subject for the workshop.
The participants will have offices in the Niels Bohr International Academy building (next to the Niels Bohr Institute in the former Nordita building). Seminars given by the participants will be arranged during the workshop.
