Testing of Linear Force-Free Magnetic Field Extrapolation Methods, Using MDI data of Active Region AR-11123


A reliable method of detecting when a flare will erupt and the size of the fare have yet to be found. In the hunt for a measurable triggering mechanism large scale numeric computer simulations are often used. In this thesis I will test three different methods for extrapolating a magnetic field from surface data as a linear force-free field (LFFF). After testing how the computed fields behaves when evolved in an magnetic hydro dynamic (MHD) code, I find that a combination of the Alissandrakis Fast Fourier Transform and the Nakagawa-Raadu method gives the best results.
