NBIA Colloquium by Marc Barthélémy

How cities develop: a physicist's perspective

Marc Barthélémy

(CEA-Saclay)

Physical arguments and modeling enable one to understand a number of features of data on urban growth. The first example I shall consider is that a number of quantities, such as the total energy used in transportation, and the length of the street network, display a scaling behavior as a function of the total population and I shall show how the observed nontrivial exponents come about. The second topic will be how to understand the evolution of transportation networks, such as streets and subways.

Refreshments will be served in the NBIA lounge after the talk.
