Quantum Optics Seminar by William Plick

Greater control over the so-called "complex spatial modes of light" using spatial light modulators (SLMs) is opening up a new field with potentially vast application to practical technology and basic science. This includes quantum and classical communication, atom trapping, micro-mechanics, and even astronomy. However the quantum theory of these beams has been outpaced by our capabilities in the lab. There are many interesting unanswered questions related to physical interpretation, topological properties, entanglement verification, and more. Answering these questions not only provides greater insight into the nature of light, but also holds promise for improving useful technologies. We will investigate some of these topics, arriving at a few answers, and more questions.
