Preparing for ESS

The eScience center is hosting a series of talks with the general topic “preparing for ESS”. The talk audience is expected to be masters-, and PhD-students, as well as faculty at Science, but anybody with a general knowledge of science is expected to benefit from the talks!

The June speaker is Brian Vinter, NBI, and the talk title is: Face it: Your notebook is not enough!

Abstract: ESS is one in a string of mega-science projects that produce data in a rate that far exceeds what conventional computers can handle. The Large Hadron Collider, LHC, at CERN realized this 20 years ago and set up a system, the Large Hadron Grid, LHG, to help facilitate the computing needs for the experiments under LHC.

In this talk I will focus on the practicalities of getting access to the Minimum intrusion Grid, MiG, which is hosted by the eScience Center. Both students and faculty can use our internal Grid system and get access to far more compute and storage than your notebook can offer. In addition the MiG system has several tools to help facilitate collaboration amongst groups of students and/or researchers, and of course you can access the Grid from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection and a web-browser.

Time: Friday June 22nd  14.00
Place: HCØ D203
After the talk there will be refreshments
