PhD Defense by Franziska Kaminski

In this thesis light-matter interaction in evaporatively cooled ultra cold atomic ensembles is studied. Spatially-resolved polarization rotation measurements are presented which were obtained with a dual-port polarization-contrast imaging method, which allows to distinguish diffraction effects from the rotation signal. An increased rotation angle is found as compared to a Maxwell-Bloch model, which can be attributed to light-assisted cold-collisions. The presented imaging technique is a key ingredient for high fidelity multimode quantum memories.
