Midterm Colloquium by Emil Zeuthen

A new regime in cooling of mechanical vibrations by means of coupling to a driven electromagnetic cavity (for instance an optical cavity or a microwave electrical LC circuit) has been established in recent years. In this way, cooling of mechanical vibration to its quantum ground state has now been achieved.

At this Midterm Colloquium I will give an introduction to resolved sideband cooling in the context of opto- and electromechanics. Furthermore, I will discuss the possibility of exploiting the efficient cooling of a vibrating mechanical membrane to indirectly cool an ensemble of nuclear spins.
