Quantum Optics Seminar by Francesco Lenzini

This work deals with two different applications of a Two Wave Mixing process in a liquid crystal Kerr-like medium. 

The first part of the work deals with the Two Wave Mixing as an optical amplification process. This gain process is used for the realization of optical cavities, and a study of the cavity field statistic in the high Fresnel number regime is carried out. A transition from a Gaussian to a Long Tail statistic is experimentally shown in the passage from a 4 mirror cavity to a 3 mirror cavity. The second part of the work deals with a Two Wave Mixing process between optical vortex beams. A theoretical model is developed, accounting for the selection rules of the topological charges on the diffraction orders.

The selection rules are experimentally shown to be correct both for integer charges and for fractional charges.
