Attracting Students to build a career with science - the success of NYSF

Speaker: Prof. Hans Bachor, Canberra

They come from our schools where many, including parents, are thinking:  Science is hard and not for the fainthearted. There are no jobs outside Universities for scientists.  If you are good at science you are probably an outsider, a nerd and certainly the future looks dim for you. For a career go where the money is: economics, law and medicine.....

Despite all of this, after the 2 week NYSF program they are committed to learning science or engineering, more than 85% study it, they have great fun and made buddies for life. Over the years more than 8000 bright students formed networks of friends who will become influential colleagues in the future.  In operation for 28 years across all of Australia, supported by Universities, Industry and Rotarians NYSF is a great example of motivating and empowering students. This talk will describe how it works, what creates the success and where we could take if from here.
