Discovery seminar by Cristina Carloganu from LPC / IN2P3 / CNRS

Abstract:

The idea to use the atmospheric muons for studying massive objects is an old one. As early as 60's, they were used for searching for hidden chambers in an egyptian pyramid. Later on, they were used for testing the absence of heavy Z elements within merchandise containers.

Since 2007-2008, it has been shown that they can also provide interesting information in volcanology, provided that large area detectors with good angular resolution are available. The seminar will present the very first results obtained by the TOMUVOL collaboration, a volcano tomography project using Glass Resistive Plate Chambers developed within the CALICE collaboration for (semi) digital hadronic calorimetry.
