The First Stars: Clues from QSO Absorption Lines

Talk by Max Pettini, Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge

The epoch of re-ionisation, when the first stars heralded the end of the cosmic dark ages and made the universe accessible to optical and infrared telescopes, has been described as the last frontier in current observational cosmology. It is a topic which in the last few years has been attracting the attention of several different groups of astronomers, whose interests are converging on this crucial phase in the evolution of the universe. In my talk I shall describe recent work which uses the absorption spectra of distant quasars to uncover clues to the nature of the earliest episodes of star formation and nucleosynthesis.
