Probing new physics with ultra high energy cosmic neutrinos

Subir Sarkar (University of Oxford)

Recent observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays by the Pierre Auger Observatory are consistent with spectral steepening beyond ~6 x 1010 GeV due to photo-pion production on the cosmic microwave background. Moreover there are correlations of the arrival directions with nearby active galactic nuclei. An important corollary is that there must be ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos generated both in the sources of cosmic rays and during their intergalactic propagation. Neutrino interactions at such high energies can provide an unique probe of new phenomena ranging from non-perturbative effects in QCD to TeV scale quantum gravity.
