Quantum computation with Wigner crystals of ions

Laser cooled ions confined in a Penning trap could exhibit phase transitions to a 2D-Wigner crystal. The typical ion distance in such a crystal is of the order of 10 microns, so that single ions could be addressed by using strong focussed lasers. Several thousand ions could be confined in such a crystal, which provides a very good scalability of the system. Recently there were proposals for implementing quantum gates in an ion crystal at the presence of phonons [1] and for implementing quantum gates in a Wigner crystal of ions [2,3].

The talk will present the properties of trapped ions in a Penning trap, and introduce the concept of the quantum gate. Furthermore, a scheme for the implementation of the gate is presented, and the normal modes of the ion crystal are discussed
