Physics at the International Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research - Status of the FAIR Project

Talk by Professor Volker Metag, II. Physikalisches Institut, University of Giessen, Germany

Abstract:

The talk describes the four pillars of the FAIR scientific program: hadron physics,  nuclear and quark matter, exotic nuclei and nuclear astrophysics, atomic/plasma physics and applied sciences. The physics potential of these fields will be discussed and the new research opportunities will be outlined. The main accelerator components and detector systems will be presented. Parallel operation  for the different research fields - a key feature of the new facility - will be illustrated. The status of the R&D for accelerators and detectors and the timelines for construction and commissioning of the facility are discussed.
