Novel Complex Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage - Preparation and Charactarization

This research project was motivated by the serious challenges: the limited supply of fossil fuels and global warming issues. One of the possible solutions to these serious problems is that the hydrogen will be the primary energy carrier.

However, one great obstacle for the application is the inadequacy of current hydrogen storage techniques. A potential safe and inexpensive method to store hydrogen is the solid state hydrogen storage materials.

Complex hydrides, with larger hydrogen storage capacities, may potentially satisfy the requirements for future on-board applications. In this research project the properties of several complex hydrides (NaAlH4, LiAlH4, and LiBH4) are studied for a better understanding of these materials.

A number of different experimental techniques, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS), and Sievert's type apparatus, were used to characterize different material properties.
