Dynamics of Growth: Decisions in Phages and Gene Segregation in Bacteria

This PhD thesis ventures into two areas of biology. The first is decisions in simple organisms, where the aim is to understand why and how two or more developmental strategies are available to some simple organisms. This is done through a study of a very well characterized virus called phage lambda. The other area is to understand the role of spatial correlations in gene segregation during range expansions, due to experiments showing a somewhat counter- intuitive segregation of an initial mixture of two types of cells, into large scale domains containing a single type of cells. Through modeling the aim is to bridge the gap between these experiments and the existing theoretical expectations.
