Atmospheric Solvers for Weather and Climate Models

Pressing scientific problems in weather prediction and climate science are driving the need for global nonhydrostatic atmospheric models. The solvers for the equations of motion on the resolved scales, the so-called dynamical cores, lie at the center of these models and are the focus of this talk. Anticipated increases in grid resolution put strong demands on the computational efficiency of the solvers on parallel computing platforms and at the same time there is a high demand for inherent conservation (like conservation of mass, consistent tracer transport, etc.). There appears to be no obviously-superior solver architecture for next generation dynamical cores that possess the desirable properties mentioned above. Some advances and outstanding problems with candidate solvers are discussed.
