Speaker: V. Niarchos, Ecole Polytechnique
Title: Exploring the Dynamics of Orientifold QCD
Abstract: Combining Seiberg duality in N=1 SQCD with planar equivalence between SQCD and a non-supersymmetric QCD-like orientifold daughter (OQCD) we argue for a non-supersymmetric Seiberg duality. We make a precise proposal for this duality beyond the planar limit and consider its implications for the strongly coupled IR dynamics of OQCD - for example, we get the exact range of the conformal window. Supporting evidence for this picture arises from string theory, where Seiberg duality can be m...

Title: Deforming, revolving and resolving - new paths in the string theory landscape
Abstract: String theory vacua with different flux quanta seemingly form a discrete set, but can in fact often be continuously connected by applying monodromies of the Calabi-Yau geometry. Such continuously connected vacua are interesting from the point of view of cosmology, and for constructing domain walls, for example. An intriguing question is which vacua can continuously be connected in this way, and which cannot. I discuss the example of the mirror quintic, and show that there is an extra...

Thesis seminar: Seismic anisotropy

26 October 2007 kl. 9:15

Navn: Mariann Richterhausen
Seismic anisotropy occurs when elastic waves vibrating or travelling in one direction travel faster than another. It can be caused by 1) thin layers of otherwise isotropic material with different velocities or aligned heterogeneities, 2) aligned, fluid-filled fractures or cracks, and 3) aligned anisotropic minerals.
