Aktuel forskning

Reconstruction of climate records from ice cores, particularly with respect to trace impurities and the provenance of dust. My PhD research involved pioneering measurements of isotopic variations in picogram-per-gram (10-12 g/g) concentrations of lead (Pb) in Antarctic ice, which resulted in identification of the first instances of widespread pollution of Antarctica in the late 19th century. Novel techniques were also developed for the identification of sources of dust present in Antarctica, which has led to active involvement in international collaboratorive projects DIRTMAP2 (Dust Indicators and Records of Terrestrial and Marine Palaeoenvironments 2) and INQUA PALCOM working group (ADOM2), culminating in co-hosting a day-long session at the XVIII INQUA congress in Bern, CH in July 2011. This research theme continued with measurements of trace elements in the laboratories of the Environmental Analytical Chemistry department at University Ca' Foscari of Venice, as part of the Italian/French TALDICE Talos Dome Ice Coring project. I am presently involved in the determination of ice core impurities and their origins in dust storms, marine sea salts, forest fires, volcanism and anthropogenic activity. This includes an active participation in the NEEM (North Eemian) Ice Coring project and I have conducted two summer field seasons in Greenland (2010, 2011). Additional field experience includes a pre-drilling site survey at Mt Ortles (Cevedale, 2950 m asl) in Northern Italy (2009). 

Undervisnings- og vejledningsområder

I have prepared and delivered undergraduate and graduate courses in climate science and applied mass spectrometry. Public outreach activities include delivering popular talks to high school groups and interviews for television and radio. I was involved in organizing and delivering laboratory and freezer tours as part of 2010 and 2011 Copenhagen City Culture Night. Taught graduate courses "Isotopic Fingerprinting: Principles and applications" (2009) and "Isotopic systems and climate change" (2009); Undergraduate courses "Contemporary Science 102" (2006) and "Isotope Science 302/402" (2005). Within the last 5 years I have supervised 2 BSc project students, 4 Master students and 2 PhD students.
