Artiklen indeholder den af International Union of Geological Sciences ratificerede definition af starten af den nuværende mellemistid, Holocæn. Definitionen - et såkaldt Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) - er baseret på analyse af data fra den grønlandske NGRIP-iskerne.
