Wheeler suggested that geometry is not fundamental to physical phenomena and had to be replaced by a discrete model, a 'pregeometry', in order to reconcile gravity with quantum mechanics.

Wheeler said that this pregeometry can only be discovered by studying non-geometric structures. Cellular automata show that simple dynamics can generate physical behavior over larger scales. By simulating discrete dynamics it may be possible to make progress by testing ideas.
