Master thesis defense by Rosina Hein

DARK MSc student Rosina Hein will be defending her MSc thesis on Wednesday the 25th November at 14:00 in the Rockefeller Auditorium.

Thesis title: Dust In The Galaxy

Abstract: This master thesis is a study of the dust in the Galaxy. I have performed this study through a thorough investigation of the expanding X-ray halo around GRB 031203. This halo is caused by the scattering of the GRB X-ray light by dust residing in our own Galaxy. The analysis of this halo reveals characteristics of the dust layers doing the scattering. Through the analysisI find distances to the two layers of dust causing the scattering and I generally confirm the scattered nature of the halo light. These found distances are some of the most accurate in astronomy outside the Solar-system.
