Postdoc on Phononic Force Sensors

A postdoctoral position is available on the development of zepto-newton force sensors for applications in classical and quantum sensing. The devices will exploit phononic engineering, in particular the concept of “soft clamping” pioneered at the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI). The position is part of a collaborative “Sinergia” project between NBI and ETH Zurich. The position is initially open for a 2 year periode.

The project unites expertise in quantum optomechanical transducers and phononics (Schliesser group) at NBI with force microscopy and magnetic quantum sensing (Degen/Eichler group) and broad theory support (Chitra/Zilberberg group) at ETHZ. Its ultimate goals include coupling of mechanical resonators to single nuclear spins, subnanometer magnetic resonance imaging, and mass density measurements of individual molecules.

Towards these goals, the postdoc will develop and implement new concepts for force sensors and transducers, drawing on phononic engineering, parametric transduction and quantum feedback techniques. The successful candidate will have a strong PhD in experimental physics or relevant engineering disciplines, and extensive experience in finite-element modeling (preferably MEMS, nanomechanics) and nanofabrication techniques including electron beam lithography. Experience with microwave and/or optical interferometry, good understanding of photonic/phononic crystals, and basic quantum measurement theory complete the profile of the ideal candidate.

Inquiries about the position can be made to Prof. Albert Schliesser, albert.schliesser@nbi.dk

The position is open from 1 September 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter, depending on the availability of the best-qualified candidate.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

  • Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
  • The starting salary is currently up to DKK 419.772 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 71.781). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below.
